There are many different parts to the modern skateboard including the deck, trucks, wheels, and the numerous accessories that you could add to your collection of skateboards. The first and most obvious piece that your feet make contact with is the skateboard deck. The deck is usually made from Canadian maple wood which is glued and bent to create a seven to nine layer ply-wood topped with a layer of grip tape. The material can also be inlayed with any number of composite materials that add to the rigidity and strength of the deck. Materials like carbon fiber and plastic have been used with varying degrees of success to augment the natural composition of the maple and the glue resin that is used.

Trucks are the second most complicated portion of the skateboard setup. The trucks of skateboards are found underneath the board and are comprised of a baseplate, hanger, brushing, and kingpin. The baseplate attaches the rest of the trucks to the underside of the deck. The brushing is the cushion between the hanger and the baseplate that surrounds the kingpin. The hanger holds the axel. The kingpin is an adjustable area where the trucks can be made more rigid or less rigid which plays into the performance and the specific handling of the skateboard you desire.

The wheels are one of the technical advancements of skateboards. Most of the time, they are made of a polyurethane composite which makes them hard and durable, although hardness is a determining factor in the wheels. The other determining factor is diameter. The diameter of the wheel will usually indicate what the application for that wheel is. For instance, a 35 mm wheel will generally be used for flat skateboarding for someone who wants to do some tricks. The reason is that 35mm have a low profile and are very hard, making the transfer of energy from your feet and legs almost direct to the ground, so that your Ollie’s are as high are they can be. A 100mm wheel would have a plastic core and be soft and grip the ground well. The difference for this wheel is speed and you would find this wheel on a downhill slalom longboard, or just a cruising longboard. Either way the wheels are important and have two primary factors: hardness and diameter.

There are many different accessories that could compliment or add to the value and characteristics of your skateboard, but one of the up and coming areas is the clothing lineup associated with the production of skateboards. T-shirts, hats, belts, some jeans, jackets, stickers, and other paraphernalia are flooding the market from the many different local, up and coming shops as well as some of the more established skater brands like Volcom. The Volcom brand specifically caters to the youth of skateboarding, snowboarding and surfing, it makes sense that they are a major producer of stuff in this area as well.
